How do I compare Swiss health insurance premiums?

Enter your postcode, date of birth, desired franchise and insurance model, and you get a complete neutral table of every insurer for your premium region, ranked by price. Premiums for identical coverage vary by thousands of francs a year between insurers, so comparing before you choose is the single biggest saving in Swiss basic insurance.

FAQ

Why do premiums differ so much for the same coverage?
Basic insurance benefits are identical by law, but each insurer prices differently by region and age. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive insurer for the same coverage can exceed CHF 3,000 per year.
Does the postcode matter, or just the canton?
The postcode matters. Premiums vary by premium region within a canton. We resolve your postcode to its exact region — canton alone gives wrong figures.
Should I include accident coverage?
If you're employed more than 8 hours a week for the same employer, your employer covers accidents — exclude it to lower your premium. Otherwise include it.
Is the comparison free?
Yes. The full ranked table for any profile is free. Only the cross-insurer franchise optimisation and the cancellation letter are paid.
What do the insurance models mean — HMO, Telmed, standard, family doctor?
Standard: free choice of any licensed doctor or specialist directly. HMO: first contact must be the HMO group practice; referral needed for specialists. Telmed: call the telephone medical hotline first for authorisation. Family doctor (Hausarztmodell): you designate one GP as your gatekeeper. All models provide the same statutory benefits — restricted models have lower premiums in exchange for limited direct access.
What is a premium region, and why does my postcode matter?
Each canton has between 1 and 3 premium regions, defined by local healthcare cost levels. The most urbanised areas (e.g. Geneva city, Zurich city, Lugano) are typically in the most expensive region. Premiums differ by region within a canton, so only your postcode — not your canton alone — gives the correct figure.
When can I switch insurer?
Once a year, with the new policy starting 1 January. Your cancellation must arrive at your current insurer by 30 November. There is also an extraordinary right to cancel within one month of a premium increase announcement, effective at year-end. Mid-year switches are not possible except in rare exceptional circumstances.
Does the comparison include supplementary insurance?
No. comparevital covers only basic mandatory insurance (KVG/LAMal), where premiums are public and coverage is identical by law. Supplementary insurance (VVG/LCA) is voluntary, individually negotiated, and separately regulated — insurers may refuse applicants and prices are not standardised.
